The world's largest global hackathon, engaging thousands of citizens each year across the globe to use NASA's open data to build innovative solutions to challenges we face on Earth and in space.
Event Overview
The SpaceApps Challenge 2025 is the local edition of NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge, a global hackathon that brings together coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, technologists, and innovators to address real-world problems using NASA’s open data. This two-day event focuses on developing innovative solutions for space exploration, satellite technology, and Earth observation.
Challenge Themes
The specific challenges for the 2025 Space Apps Challenge will be announced closer to the event date. These challenges are created by NASA experts and typically cover various aspects of space and Earth science.
For reference, past Space Apps Challenges have included themes such as:
Earth and Space Science
Analyzing climate data, monitoring natural disasters, tracking biodiversity, or studying celestial phenomena.

Registration Information
Registration opens on July 17, 2025. Early registration is recommended as participation is limited to +100 attendees. Teams of 3-5 members are suggested, but individuals are also welcome and will be assisted in finding teams.

What skills or background do I need to participate?
Teams benefit from diverse skills - programming, engineering, design, business development, and domain knowledge in space-related fields are all valuable. No specific space expertise is required - mentors will provide guidance and resources.
What should I bring?
Bring your laptop, relevant software tools, and any hardware components you may need for prototyping. Basic electronic components and 3D printing facilities will be available on-site.
Is there a participation fee?
No, participation is free. Thanks to our generous sponsors, all expenses including meals, materials, and access to specialized resources during the event are covered.
Will data and APIs be provided?
Yes, NASA and its partner space agencies provide a wealth of open data sets and APIs for participants to use. The official Space Apps Challenge website offers a Resource Library with datasets, tools, and educational materials. Additionally, our local mentors will provide guidance on accessing and utilizing these resources during the event.
Is accommodation included?
Accommodation is not included. However, we will provide recommendations for nearby hotels and other lodging options for participants traveling from out of town.
Venue Location
The SpaceApps Challenge 2025 will be held at the Craiova Art Museum, located in the heart of Craiova.
The venue is easily accessible by public transportation and has parking facilities nearby. It’s located in the central area of Craiova, just steps away from the city’s main square. The Art Museum is housed in a historic building and offers an inspiring creative environment for the hackathon.
